New Year’s Resolutions vs Life Resolutions: Which Do You Do?

What is your New Year’s resolution? Or resolutions? Most likely you will be spammed by a hundred blogs, tweets, emails, television commercials, and pesky family members who will ask you that question.

According to Macmillan Dictionary, a New Year’s Resolution is: “a decision that you make on the first day of the year about the things that you intend to do or stop doing during that year.”

I think it is fine for people who do it. It can be a very powerful motivator for some people. But I’m not sure I have ever been a New Year’s Resolution type of person. Instead… I am this type of person: “This sucks, I’m going to change it now.” So I have no New Year’s resolution.

I do have bucket list items… and those are sometimes difficult because there are financial blocks which accompany them.

In 2013 I completed a major bucket list item– my first marathon. In addition, my wife and I became foster parents… another bucket list item. Plus I was able to dabble in oil painting again. All great things… but none of them was necessarily a New Year’s resolution. Instead they were bucket list items, which are life resolutions. I keep a running list of life resolutions, aka a bucket list, and each year I add things and also “check things off” the list.

I hope my list of completed bucket list items continues to grow… and I continue to check items off the list. A big thing on my bucket list is visiting Italy. The Italy item on my bucket list has started to bother me. Why? I have twice had opportunities to go to Italy, but instead went to Uganda and the Philippines. In addition I may have a third opportunity for Italy… but all three opportunities have been work/study related. I just want to go to Italy on a vacation. Simply being in the country isn’t the bucket list item. I want to explore and enjoy Italy.

So I am a life resolutions person… not a New Year’s Resolutions type of person. Which are you? Regardless of whether you are a New Year’s Resolution type of person, or a Life Resolutions type of person, I wish you success in completing your resolutions… plus a safe and happy New Year!
