Last Week a Character began Following Me … A Writer’s Journey;_ylu=X3oDMTBxNG1oMmE2BHNlYwNmcC1hdHRyaWIEc2xrA3J1cmwEaXQD/RV=2/RE=1414907592/RO=11/ week a character I did not recognize began following me.

Creepy? Not really. Annoying? Very. Maybe this is a good thing… but it is very distracting. I am currently committed to writing a novel, and committed to the characters in that novel. I don’t know the name, gender, or age of this figure. I can only tell you this figure is human… and began following me the other night. So yes… my next story idea is already brewing. But it is difficult to focus on my current project while this new character is stalking me…

Based on this character who began following me, I made some notes for the next novel. These notes cover the general story idea and character so I would not forget. But still the character haunts me. As I work on my current novel, flashes of brilliance for my next novel pop into my head. I’m not even certain this is a positive thing for the creative process… because it takes away from my current project. It does mean I have nothing to fear from writer’s block after I finish this “current” novel.

Currently only one character from the next novel has begun following me. As soon as more characters begin appearing, it will start to take focus from my current novel.

Thankfully I am in an editing stage for my current novel. But an upcoming stage for my current novel is something that I call the character edit stage. If the new characters from my next novel continue to pester me, it could really muddy my character editing ability for the characters in my current novel. Oh well. I love writing so this is not a crisis. Just annoying.

When a character from a different story begins following you… while you are working hard on a novel… how do you deal?
