The Top Ten Favorite Posts From My Second Year of Blogging

Well, it has been a second year of blogging for Ish Ism. Yes, my first blog post was April 1st, 2012. This second year was clearly harder for me than the first year. They say life has seasons… and this season was a stressful one for me.

1.) I am in my third year of graduate school studying for a comprehensive exam. Studying for the exam takes a lot of time, and I am actually taking it March 31st to April 3rd. So… as this auto post goes up, I am in the middle of a brutal exam. To survive the exam I am fully stocked with coffee, coffee cream, bread, lunch meat, coffee, swiss cheese, coffee, chocolate milk, Soft Batch Cookies, peanuts, and coffee.

2.) I became a foster parent… which apparently also needs coffee.

3.) I am the director of a new blog about food studies. Which, when combined with the other two… needs coffee.

Foster parenting + directing a blog + graduate school + comprehensive exam + marriage = little time for blogging and lots of stress. But by the end of June I will be done with directing the food studies blog, and finished with the comprehensive exam. Thank you to those who continue to drop by even as my blogging has become less regular.

Anyway, following are my top ten favorite posts from my second year of blogging! Thanks for reading and have a wonderful day.

1.) The Seattle Marathon

2.) Today I became a Dad for the First Time

3.) Foster Care Day 26 – Using Cloth Diapers

4.) I finished the Eugene Marathon

5.) My First Time Oil Painting in over 20 Years

6.) Happy Little Trees and the Joy of Painting

7.) Sunset on the Oregon Coast

8.) Cooking with the Alice B. Toklas Cookbook

9.) Spider Web in Ice

10.) Reblog from my Wife’s Blog “Things I have actually had to say”

Very Inspiring Blogger Award

I was nominated for the “Very Inspiring Blogger Award” by Chronicles of a Public Transit User (Sweetness6645)!! How cool is that 🙂

Inspiring Award

It has been a crazy couple weeks getting ready to be a foster parent. Unfortunately, the foster care system seems very overworked because we have received three calls in the past week to take in kids…

Anyway, now that I have the toddler asleep in his crib, I can respond to this very cool award.

The award rules:

1. Display the award logo on your blog.
2. Link back to the person who nominated you.
3. Nominate 15 other bloggers for this award and link to them.
4. Notify those bloggers of the nomination and the award’s requirements.

My nominees are:

  1. Ranting About Rectangles, inspired me to pursue becoming a foster parent (and is inspiring in general, which is why I married her).
  2. Bucket List Productions inspires me, and many others, to pursue the joys in life “now.” Buckets lists were, at one time, for people at the end of their lifetime to make up for all the goals they never accomplished. But Bucket List Productions inspires people to pursue their bucket list goals “now.”
  3. Waiting On a Word, one of many great blogs I follow, which inspire me to be a better parent and a better blogger. Waiting on a Word already received this award from someone else, which helps you understand how awesome this blog is!!!
  4. Pudding the Damage On, another great blog that inspires me to be a better parent.
  5. Rosie Says, a blog about gender issues that reminds me there is still a lot of gender inequality in the world… whether it is women in the U.S., or women in the Egypt protests. This inspires me to continue working to make the world better.
  6. The Return of the Modern Philosopher reminds me that the world has a lot of stories. When life seems to be a bit too stressful, reading some of his posts inspires me to relax and not sweat the small stuff.
  7. Sounds like Orange inspires me to sample new music. Every week there are new music artists reviewed on this site… along with other interesting posts 🙂
  8. Livenowandzen, inspires me not only as a blogger but as a parent. The honesty in her posts is humble, plus she is a very good writer.
  9. The Thesis Whisperer, well, I am a graduate student… so this blog is very helpful to me. It inspires me to be a better academic writer, and to not give up when grad school gets “gradschoolish.” In addition, it was because of this blog that I followed through with the idea for a mini-retreat to finish my master’s paper!
  10. Don’t We Look Alike, a blog that has been encouraging to me during the foster care journey my wife and I have pursued.
  11. Drops of Ink, a blog that has already won this award (3 times). You should still check out the haikus / poetry produced by this blog on a regular basis.
  12. Lost in Thot, a blog of wonderful photography that inspires me to attempt great photographs.
  13. Running for Haiti, someone like me who is running for a cause!
  14. Jump for Joy Photo Project, inspiring and fun blog from a creative photo artist.
  15. Leanne Cole Photography, an inspiring and dynamic photo artist that everyone should check out.

I was nominated for this award a couple weeks ago. Again, thank you to Chronicles of a Public Transit User (Sweetness6645). I apologize in the delay for responding to it, but as you know the last couple weeks have been quite busy and amazing for me as I became a foster dad for the first time!

For a foster update, this happened yesterday. I do not have a pseudonym for the foster kid yet:

Kid was hungry, so I made a bottle of milk and formula. The kid started clapping and laughing in anticipation. I turned, dropped the bottle… and it was like a milk volcano erupted in the kitchen. Kid’s laughter turned into crying, literally, over spilled milk. Even though the kid was freaking out, I faked being calm, and in supersonic speed I had a new bottle of milk/formula ready. The kid laughed and guzzled the bottle of formula. While the kid guzzled the bottle of formula, the cats and I cleaned up the spilled milk in the kitchen.

That’s all for now! Thanks for reading, and have a safe and wonderful 4th of July!!

My Top Ten Favorite Posts – My First Year of Blogging

Fireworks, Ish Ism One Year Anniversary
http://gifninja.com/animated-gifs/147128/fireworks

Thank you wonderful readers! Today is the one year anniversary from my first blog post, yes, on April 1st. Looking back over my first year I can see that the quality of the posts has gone steadily up (in my opinion).

For those readers who have stuck with me since the beginning, thank you very much.

For those who have only recently joined, thank you.

Below are my favorite posts from my first year of blogging. They aren’t necessarily the most popular ones in terms of page views but they are my favorites.  Three are about my amazing wife, two are about marathon training, two are about foster care, and the other three are the random awesomeness that my blog features on a weekly basis. I did not list any posts from my time in the Philippines because even though I enjoyed writing those … well, they weren’t very good (probably because of the time difference).

I hope you enjoy these if you have not read them (or enjoy them again if you forgot about them!) I look forward to a great second year. Thanks for reading!

My Fundraising Page for WomenspacePart of my marathon running this year includes raising money for Womenspace, a domestic violence shelter and advocacy group: Intimate partner violence can be emotional, physical, sexual or economic abuse. It is the most common and least reported crime in our country. Every 9 seconds in the United States, a woman is battered by her husband, boyfriend or live-in partner. Battering crosses all economic, cultural, racial and religious lines. This epidemic of violence can touch any of us. It will take all of us to make each of us safe.
